Frank Thomas are not well-known for making motorcycle helmets, but since 2012 FT helmets have been coming thick and fast – and selling well! The FT39SV is the latest model – but is it any good?
The FT39SV is compliant with safety standard ECER2205 which is the road safety standard necessary to use on UK (and all European) roads. The polycarbonate shell is strong whilst being lightweight to prevent wind fatigue. The safety strap is a very easy to use, but ultra-reliable, micro ratchet retention strap that is fully adjustable for the perfect fit. An internal sun-visor prevents sun glare impeding your vision.
The Frank Thomas FT39SV boasts a famous graphic designer: Franzan design. Famous for their helmet designs, they put their expertise to the FT39SV Nautilus range. There is plenty of choice with 7 colourways available. The shell itself features an aggressive aerodynamic design – easy on the eye but also easy on your neck!
As mentioned before, the shell of the FT39SV is ultra-lightweight in an aggressive shape for optimum aerodynamics and comfort at higher speeds. A personalised ventilation system with sealable vents and exhausts provides optimum air circulation for superior comfort. The comfort lining is mesh lined to keep you fresh and is fully removable and washable. The clear anti-scratch visor his quick-release for added convenience and this also comes with a retractable internal sun visor to prevent sun glare. The sun visor comes down nice and low and is operated with an easy-access button at the side, easy to use with your gloves on! The micro-ratchet retention strap is safe and easily adjustable.
The drop-down sun visor has an easy-access button at the side which is easy to operate while wearing your gloves. The adjustability of the micro-ratchet strap provides a great fit for all, and the ventilation system can be fully personalised. The anti-scratch visor is quick-release and extremely easy to change. Another highly practical feature is the lining is mesh lined and fully removable and washable. It also has recesses for speakers, which more premium helmets, such as the HJC C70, doesn’t!
A polycarbonate shell although lightweight, is not as light or as strong as more premium shells such as fibreglass – but what do you expect for the money? The smaller sizes can come up a little large – it is worth having a try on to make sure this fits you well.
For under £100 the Frank Thomas FT39SV is a great helmet. Light and aerodynamic with lots of great features and a great choice of colours with a Franzan Design!
Until next time, stay safe,
